La Crosse Wedding

We went to La Crosse, Wisconsin, last weekend to celebrate Sean’s cousin Chance and Katie’s wedding. This was my first time in La Crosse and it was such a pretty town, right along the Mississippi River. It’s a college town with a fun downtown. Our hotel was right along the river overlooking downtown.

Living in California means that get-togethers with family are few and far-between. It was so much fun to spend time with my mother-in-law, aunts, uncles and cousins, especially since it’s so rare that we’re all in the same place. They are partiers and we all had a great time on the dance floor! I feel so lucky to have married into a family that is so kind, laid-back and FUN.

Congratulations, Chance and Katie! Thanks for making us a part of your wedding day.

Weekend Report

We had a really busy (and fun) weekend, which seems to be the trend for the rest of September. We are going to weddings the next two weekends, can’t wait! It will be the first weddings we’re attending since our own, so I’m looking forward to sitting back, relaxing, eating, drinking and celebrating our friends and family.

But back to the weekend. On Friday night we went to Cobb’s Comedy Club to see David Spade. Aka Joe Dirt and Richard from Tommy Boy. He was funny enough, but my favorite was the opener, Kevin Farley. I mean, he’s Chris Farley’s brother – comedy is in his genes!

On Saturday we took a trip across the new Bay Bridge to St. George’s Spirits in Alameda for a tour/tasting at the distillery. I’ve been to plenty of wine tastings, but a straight-up liquor tasting is not really my style. I kept waiting for them to make cocktails for me, but didn’t happen. Instead, I gave all my tastes to Sean and Wes! You’re welcome, boys.

We tried all of the spirits listed – the absinthe was actually my favorite! The kaffir lime vodka was great too and we picked up a bottle and a few types of gin (St. George’s specialty). I see Moscow Mules in my future. The tour was interesting and despite not being able to handle straight booze, I’m glad we went.

From there we went to a friend’s apartment to cheer on Michigan. They played Notre Dame in a night game – which on the west coast starts at 5pm. Perfect for cocktail hour! Such a great game, it was close and exciting and Michigan won, yay!

Sunday was low-key, we cleaned up our apartment a little and finally unpacked from our Michigan trip. Then we got down to business: sandwiches, cocktails and the 49ers game.

I’ve been seeing a weird variation on a BLT floating around Pinterest – a BLT with peanut butter. It was SO SO GOOD! Sounds bizarre, but the key is the assembly. You put peanut butter on one slice of bread (I used brioche) and then top it with bacon, then put mayo on the other slice with mayo, lettuce and tomato. Cut crosswise is best.  The salty, sweet and crunchy combo was amazing. I think I said “omg this is soooooooo good” between every bite.

Labor Day Weekend

20130831_105750[1]
What a weekend! It was so great to be back in Ann Arbor and celebrate the start of football season (in a SUITE! Never going back to the student section…) We went with our friends Kristen and (Boy) Jordan, who we actually became friends with in SF, but they are both Michigan grads and grew up in the Mitten too. Kristen and I first met when we took a class together at Michigan our senior year, but we didn’t all become friends until we moved to SF a year later. We knew our enginerd bfs/now husbands would hit it off and they did!

Sean and I took a red eye Friday night (new job, need to save up my vacay days!) and arrived bright and early Saturday morning. After a power nap and a shower we felt refreshed enough to meet Kristen’s family for brunch at Cafe Zola.

Kristen and her adorable nephew Cole, all decked out in Maize and Blue!

From there we started the tailgate action. We forgot a few key ingredients like chairs to sit on (tailgating is tough when you’re flying in from across the country), but we had enough food and booze to keep us occupied until kickoff!

The game was incredible. Kristen’s boss generously gave her 4 tickets for his suite, and we will be forever in her debt for inviting us. It was SO over the top in the best way possible. We didn’t eat too much during the tailgate (drinks are another story – the only flaw with the suite was no booze allowed!) because we knew there would be quite the spread waiting for us. I didn’t want to take too many pictures of it for fear of looking too out of place, but it was amazing. Kristen and Jordan had field access (I know, can I have her boss?) so we mingled with her boss, his wife and some of their friends for awhile before the game started. By mingled I mean we tried to get them to adopt us… Sorry mom and dad, I love you and all, but season tickets to a suite in the Big House?!?!

The view…I could get used to this! The game was great, we kicked some CMU ass and I didn’t fall asleep (red eye plus 3:30pm kickoff, it was touch and go at times). All in all, a great day in the Big House.

On Sunday we had one destination: Zingerman’s. This place isn’t just a deli, it is a food mecca. I dream about this sandwich, people. It’s serious. My friend Molly was back visiting her parents for the weekend so she drove in to meet us for lunch. It was so great to see her! The last time I saw her was our wedding, which now feels like forever ago (tear).

The menu. Good thing I always get the same thing so I don’t have to stress. That would be serious anxiety right there.

#73: Tarb’s Tenacious Tenure, in all its glory. What is it, you ask?

“All-natural turkey breast, fresh avocado spread, Wisconsin muenster cheese, tomato & plenty of Zingerman’s Russian dressing on grilled farm bread.”

I’m seriously drooling again looking at this picture. So worth the $13.99 price tag.

The rest of the day was spent in a severe food coma. We got drinks at a cafe on Main Street and people-watched. Well, band-watched since there was a strange drum and fife band parade going on? Never know what you’re going to see in Ann Arbor! We had a great time relaxing and waiting until we could eat again, pretty standard with this crowd ;)

Time to eat again! Well, for the guys since I refuse to eat buffalo wings. This is love right here – Sean was in hog heaven with his mango habenero wings.

We ended up stopping one more place for drinks and apps and then crashed back at our hotel. Such a great weekend with wonderful friends.  I miss Ann Arbor already. Cheers to a short work week!

Lovely Weekend

20130408_101147

This was one of the first weekends that one or both of us weren’t traveling, so it was nice to lay low and spend time together. On Friday we had dinner at a new restaurant, The Cavalier, which is run by the same people as Park Tavern (one of my all-time faves).

I didn’t take any pictures unfortunately but I love the ambiance – it’s decorated like a British hunting lodge, think lots of animal heads and leather. We had a round of cocktails and split oysters and their famous Scotch egg. So delicious! For my entree, I had the wild mushroom pie which was outstanding. Sean had the burger with beef dripping fries – YUM.

We opted to drink our dessert – a glass of Mirabelle brut rose for me and a beer for Sean. Afterwards we met up with friends at a bar in Nopa and continued the fun.

Saturday was relaxing – we caught up with stuff around the house, did laundry, etc. and then I met up with my friend Kaitlyn to enjoy the sunny weather and have a glass of wine outside.

Then we cooked a feast! Sean was in charge of making braised short ribs with figs in the crock pot and I made a salad with grilled peaches, plums and this amazing honey-goat cheese dressing from Skinny Taste. Love her recipes. I also grilled brussel sprouts on our grill pan – pretty good for an indoor grilling experience! Also Sean is quite the bartender. I am lucky to live with a fully-stocked bar cart and a husband who can make my favorite cocktails. Sidecars, cucumber gimlets, mezcal margaritas….all of the above!

The whole meal was excellent and so decadent – figs + short ribs are so rich! Luckily we have tons of leftovers. I’m thinking short rib sandwiches are in our future.

On Sunday we went on a long walk to take advantage of the sunny weather. We wandered all the way over to the Inner Richmond almost to Golden Gate Park and then turned around and Uber-ed back ;) Looking forward to a busy week (VMworld = yikes) and then Ann Arbor this weekend – can’t wait!
